A standard system to measure wood chatoyance

Finishing Okoume

A few different finishes were tested on Okoume plywood sanded to 1500-grit.

Very high chatoyance (PZC > 35) was achieved with almost all finishes.

Numeric results are summarized in table below:

Sample 1 after sanding – no finish (PZC = 15.4)

Sample 1 after 3 coats of BLO (PZC = 36.3)

Sample 2 after 3 coats of Light Shellac (PZC = 32.6)

Sample 3 after 3 coats of Medium Shellac (PZC = 32.8)

Sample 4 after 3 coats of Dense Shellac (PZC = 36.6)

Sample 5 after 1 coat of 1:10 dark brown dye and 2 coats of BLO (PZC = 40.7)

Sample 6 after 1 coat of 1:5 dark brown dye and 2 coats of BLO (PZC = 39.5)

Sample 7 after 1 coat of 1:2 dark brown dye and 2 coats of BLO (PZC = 30.6)

Sample 8 after 3 coats of Furniture Restoring Oil (PZC = 39.0)

Sample 9 after 1 coat of Epoxy Resin (PZC = 38.6)

Sample 10 after 2 coats of Nitrocellulose Lacquer (PZC = 36.8)

Sample 11 after 1 coat of Nitrolux (PZC = 38.5)
